Summary
Genkai is a legendary reiki master of considerable renown, known across both the human and demon realms. She resides alone in a vast temple and first encounters Yusuke during his second case, when he infiltrates a tournament she is hosting to find a successor for her techniques. This search is driven by her need to track down the demon Rando. Yusuke ultimately wins the tournament, defeating Rando in the process, and is subsequently accepted as Genkai’s student. As an elderly martial arts expert, Genkai possesses advanced age, and while her physical and spiritual strength has diminished, she remains a formidable fighter worthy of respect and fear. She trains Yusuke in the Spirit Light Wave Fist (Reikou Hadou Ken), known as the Spirit Wave in the English dub, pushing him to his limits. Although she may appear harsh or nasty toward Yusuke and his friends, she genuinely cares for them and strives to guide them onto the correct path. Even after transferring most of her power to Yusuke, she retains the ability to utilize some Reiki, which she notably demonstrates during the Chapter Black saga.
