Summary
Berthier, known as Bertie in English releases, is the second-youngest sister, though she holds the title of youngest in the dub. Her name derives from the mineral berthierite and is pronounced approximately as "BEAR-tyay." Serving as the counterpart to Ami Mizuno, she possesses the magical attack "Dark water." Although she fears Rubeus, she does not harbor romantic feelings for him, distinguishing her from her other siblings. In the manga narrative, Berthier receives "Code002, Operation Re-move," a directive to eliminate the Sailor Senshi and capture Chibiusa. Posing as an ordinary human, she captivates audiences with her dowsing skills using a pendulum. Upon observing Ami Mizuno detect a pipe leak without such tools, Berthier correctly identifies her as a Sailor Senshi. Leveraging her chess expertise, she challenges Ami to a televised match. During the game, she addresses Ami as "Sailor Mercury" and attempts to utilize the Black Crystal to manipulate and capture her. The confrontation escalates into a battle involving Berthier, Mercury, Jupiter, and Moon, where Berthier demonstrates the strength to deflect Mercury's Shine Snow Illusion. Ultimately, she uses sewer water to suffocate Mercury, enabling Rubeus to abduct her, before being killed by Sailor Moon. The anime portrays Berthier with a darkly playful demeanor, yet she shows profound respect for her siblings. She is uniquely distressed when Cooan is purified by the Silver Crystal. Like her counterpart Ami, she is a skilled strategist and chess player, though she is known to cheat. On her final mission, she engages in a lethal chess match with Sailor Mercury. Her plan to freeze everyone fails when Petz and Calaveras arrive to claim credit for her success, momentarily distracting her. This delay allows Tuxedo Mask to rescue Sailor Mercury and the other Senshi, giving the opportunity for a killing blow to slip away. Her older sisters subsequently abandon her as a failure. In despair, Berthier resolves to sacrifice herself to kill the Senshi, unleashing all her energy in a final blizzard with the cry "Dark Water! Full Power!" However, a healed Cooan convinces her that she remains loved and deserves a second chance. Berthier abandons her suicidal plan and allows Sailor Moon to heal her. Eventually, she and Cooan, alongside the Sailor Senshi, persuade their remaining two sisters to join them and live as normal women.
