Summary
Shorter serves as the leader of Chinatown, acting as a loyal friend to Ash while maintaining the persona of a criminal with a heart of gold. Like Ash, he is an unconventional thug defined by a strong sense of honor and a relentless drive to do what is right. He is willing to go to extreme lengths to protect those he cares about, even when the interests of his loved ones are in irreconcilable conflict. Clever, resourceful, and tough as steel, Shorter is highly skilled in brawling, shooting, and stealthy infiltration. He possesses the ability to disguise himself as an entirely different person, successfully fooling even Eiji into believing he is a dotty old Chinese man. He exhibits an irrepressible sense of humor, often wearing a lopsided, devilish grin even during the grimmest circumstances. As a charismatic leader, he can easily unite the other street kids under his command. Initially appearing with a mohawk, Shorter shaves his head completely bald by volume two. His trademark fashion accessory is a pair of sunglasses, which he wears constantly, even while sneaking through a cornfield at night. Akimi Yoshida has stated that his character design was inspired by Sunplaza Nakano.
