Yamaguchi, Akira

Summary

Akira Yamaguchi stands out as one of the brightest students in Nube’s class, undergoing a noticeable character evolution as the series progresses. Initially portrayed as a talented but perpetually unlucky boy who struggles to reach his full potential, Akira’s misfortune stems from a near-death experience at the Sanzu River, where he encountered a youkai that obstructed his ability to finish his tasks. Following Nube’s exorcism of this spirit, Akira enjoys improved luck, though he initially remains a rather generic figure. Later in the narrative, his modest demeanor shifts as he embraces the role of the class’s "mad scientist," leveraging technology to bridge the gap between humans and youkai while often showing off to achieve his goals. Originally introduced alongside Hiroshi, Kyoko, Makoto, and Miki as core allies of Nube, Akira’s plain early personality caused him to fall out of favor with fans in favor of more dynamic characters like Katsuya. Despite this, he retains his status as a semi-major character throughout the entire manga run. Similar to Miki, Akira’s name is derived from the primary male protagonist of Go Nagai’s Devilman.
