Summary
Queen Serenity serves as the embodiment of the Moon Goddess Serene and reigned as the sovereign of the Silver Millennium. Her primary responsibilities involved safeguarding the Silver Crystal and ensuring Princess Serenity was prepared to become a worthy successor. During her reign, the Earth and Moon Kingdoms were engaged in conflict, driven by Earthlings' envy of the Moon people's longevity. Prince Endymion of Earth chose to support the Moon, motivated by both his love for Princess Serenity and his disapproval of his own people's actions. The era ended tragically when Queen Metallia, leader of the Dark Kingdom, invaded the Moon, annihilating the kingdom. While all others perished, Queen Serenity survived alongside her advisors, Luna and Artemis. In her grief over the loss of her daughter and subjects, she expended the full power of the Silver Crystal to seal Queen Metallia and reincarnate the deceased into the future, which resulted in her immediate death. Her spirit remained on the Moon to watch over Earth until Princess Serenity was reborn. In the anime, Queen Serenity has a minor presence. She appears near the end of the first series as a sprite to the Sailor Senshi, revealing the history of the Moon Kingdom. She reappears to Usagi at the start of the R series, returning the Silver Crystal and a new transformation brooch before disappearing permanently. The manga expands her role slightly; instead of a sprite, a holographic image of her appears to the Senshi. She also manifests after Usagi defeats Queen Metallia, asking Usagi to succeed her as Queen of the Moon, a request Usagi declines. The Super S manga adds depth, revealing through Usagi's childhood flashbacks that Queen Neherenia was Queen Serenity's sister from another galaxy. Neherenia attempted to recruit Serenity into her evil plans. After Serenity refused, Neherenia cursed baby Princess Serenity, but Queen Serenity defeated her by sealing her inside a mirror. Later, when Princess Serenity began suffering nightmares predicting the curse's outcome, Queen Serenity imparted vital wisdom: everyone possesses a star within their heart, where darkness and light coexist. She advised that showing fear or tears allows darkness to consume the light, emphasizing that maintaining a strong inner star is the essential mission to defeat evil.
