Summary
Namu debuts during the 21st Tenka-ichi Budōkai, where he faces Ran Fuan. As a Buddhist monk, he struggles to fight her because she removes her clothes down to her underwear, socks, and shoes, but he eventually overcomes this hurdle and defeats her. His subsequent match is against Son Goku. Although the bout is intense, Namu is ultimately defeated. He entered the tournament because he needed funds to purchase large quantities of water due to a severe drought in his homeland. Upon losing, he is unable to secure the money and prepares to depart. Muten Roshi reads his thoughts and learns of his intentions. Roshi then provides him with a capsule for storing water from a well, asking Namu to impersonate Roshi in the audience in exchange. This disguise helps protect Roshi’s secret identity from his students, who suspect Chun is the true master. Namu appears again in an anime filler episode for the 22nd Tenka'chi Budōkai. He tells Goku and Roshi that he returned to enjoy the event, but he loses to Tenshinhan in the preliminary rounds. Tenshinhan leaves him unconscious and near death to send a message to Goku and his friends. Later, Namu is killed by Tambourine, a minion of Piccolo Daimaō. He is subsequently revived by Shenlong. In the DBZ series, he contributes to Goku's Spirit Bomb and makes a brief appearance in the GT episode titled Piccolo's Decision. Unconfirmed rumors suggest a potential relation to Uub. His name is derived from the Nenbutsu phrase "Namu Amida Butsu".
