Summary
Eumenes is a shrewd youth from Cardia who has suffered from a recurring nightmare of a woman slaughtering soldiers since he was a child. His background is gradually uncovered throughout the narrative: he is actually a Scythian orphaned when his biological family is slaughtered during a Greek slave raid. He is taken in and raised by Hieronymus, enjoying a relatively peaceful upbringing in Cardia until the chaos surrounding Thrax’s escape leads to Hieronymus’s death. This tragedy also exposes Eumenes’s true Scythian lineage, resulting in his enslavement. He is transported away from Cardia, but the vessel carrying him is destroyed in a storm after the slaves stage a mutiny. Surviving the wreck, Eumenes washes ashore in Paphlagonia near the village of Boa. He spends his formative years there, educating the locals in Greek customs and being embraced as a member of the community. His tranquil existence is shattered when a mercenary force from the nearby Greek city of Tios launches an attack on the village.
