Summary
Kotaro is a young orphan who is urged by Father Shouan to flee the monastery in the opening scene. He becomes the target of assassins sent by the Ming dynasty as well as soldiers from Akaike. Unaware of the reason for his pursuit, he approaches Nanashi for protection. His only companion on his journey prior to meeting Nanashi was his dog, Tobimaru.
