Valentine, Faye

Summary

Faye Valentine, born on August 14, 1994, is a prominent member of the bounty hunting crew in Cowboy Bebop. She is frequently depicted smoking, dressed in a form-fitting ensemble featuring bright yellow hot pants, a matching top, black suspenders, white boots, and a red long-sleeved shirt worn with the sleeves pulled down. Her signature look is completed by a headband. Physically, she is striking, with fair skin, green eyes, a violet bob, and a voluptuous figure. While she appears to be only 23, she is actually over 74 years old, having been placed in cryogenic freeze following a space shuttle accident. Set in 2071, the series sees Faye cross paths with Spike and Jet twice before ultimately settling aboard their ship. This decision causes friction with the two men, who both harbor reservations about women. Faye is characterized as brash, egotistical, and lazy, despite her dedication to her appearance. She has been arrested multiple times throughout the show, often ending up in handcuffs on the ship. She occasionally expects her male companions to handle bounties while she idly enjoys the rewards and consumes their food, which serves as another point of conflict. Despite seeming like a nuisance, Faye is a capable team member. She is physically formidable, as demonstrated in the episode "Cowboy Funk," where she displays significant combat strength. She is also an expert pilot, holding her own against Spike in aerial dogfights with her ship, the Red Tail. Her marksmanship is equally impressive; she is first seen disabling a vessel with a Heckler & Koch MP5, though she is caught shortly after. In the movie, she uses that weapon alongside her standard Glock 30. However, her true strength lies in her verbal prowess. She possesses an unyielding attitude and a deceptive innocence, often appearing dangerous. Sarcastic and presumptuous, she rarely shows weakness or reliance on others, preferring to cheat, lie, and boast her way through life while trusting no one. Although she maintains her sharp tongue and difficult personality until the end, Faye undergoes significant character development. She learns to cherish her comrades, returning to the Bebop after realizing it is her only remaining home, describing it as the "only place I could return to." She comes to understand the pitfalls of isolation, acknowledging that despite the dysfunction of her "family," she belongs there.
