Chen, Changsheng

Chen, Changsheng

Summary

Found as an infant floating in a wooden basin on the waters of Cloud Grave, Chen Changsheng was rescued from the jaws of a Golden Dragon by Yu Ren. He was taken in by Daoist Ji, becoming the latter’s second disciple and raising him at Xining Temple. Yu Ren grew to be his most revered senior. Life at the temple was tranquil, defined by the recitation and comprehension of three thousand Daoist scriptures. At age ten, a strange affliction emerged: his body emitted an irresistible fragrance that compelled all living beings to desire to eat him. Even Yu Ren, a Saint, confessed to the intense temptation, managing to resist only through sheer willpower. The narrative commences with Chen Changsheng traveling to the capital to annul his marriage engagement with Xu Yourong, a figure of great renown across the continents. Chen Changsheng is consistently characterized by his calm and collected demeanor. The perpetual threat of death from a young age forced him to mature rapidly, causing many to mistake his age due to his serious bearing. He is incredibly strict with himself, adhering to a rigid code of conduct that includes eating at fixed times and maintaining meticulous personal hygiene. He displays a pronounced aversion to dirt, openly disapproving of any associate who appears unclean. Sheltered solely by Yu Ren and the Daoist Canon during his childhood, he remains ignorant of social niceties. He is bluntly honest and straightforward, often leaving conversational partners speechless due to his lack of subtlety and simple-mindedness.
