Summary
Akane Nishimura is a young girl who faces relentless bullying from nearly everyone in her class. Although she appears largely unaffected by the harassment, she has emotionally walled herself off from others. This defensive posture leads her to try and push away Takada when he expresses interest in her, specifically because of her nickname. Through Takada’s persistent efforts to befriend her, Akane gradually begins to open up, not only to him but also to some of her classmates who are not part of the group that bullies her. At some point in her life, she adopts a black kitten and names it Kuro. One likely reason for her reaper nickname is the fact that her mother passed away shortly after Akane was born, a tragic detail that her classmates are aware of.
