Summary
Colonel Silver serves as the initial high-ranking officer of the Red Ribbon Army that Goku encounters, leaving him significantly overwhelmed and unprepared for the confrontation. He is depicted as a highly skilled combatant with a passion for weaponry and exceptional marksmanship. Distinct from many of his peers, he prefers to gather information through questioning rather than immediate threats or violence, resorting to physical force only when his inquiries go unanswered. His speed is also notable; he manages to surprise Goku by swiftly running past him to snatch the bundle containing the Dragon Balls and the Dragon Radar from his hands. While his presence in the manga is relatively minor, Colonel Silver plays a much larger role in the anime. This expansion occurred because the Red Ribbon Army was introduced earlier in the animated series, allowing Toei to produce filler episodes featuring Silver and Emperor Pilaf while waiting for subsequent manga chapters to be released. The anime provides him with substantial characterization, similar to what was done with Colonel Violet. A peculiar aspect of his portrayal is how his personality shifts drastically depending on the dub, despite the animation remaining unchanged. In the Japanese version, he is quiet and serious. The FUNimation dub portrays him as short-tempered and aggressive, yet courteous to superiors and occasionally complimentary toward citizens. The French dub depicts him as assertive, while the Castilian dub makes him irritable and foul-tempered. In stark contrast, the Portuguese dub presents him as incapable of anger, showing understanding and patience. Regarding his fate, the manga states that Commander Red ordered his execution for failure, though this scene is never shown. In the anime, he is summoned back to the Red Ribbon base for questioning. After begging for another chance, Commander Red denies him, stating there are no second chances in the army. When ordered to be removed, Silver brushes off the guards and calmly walks out. Although Commander Red sends two guards after him, implying an off-screen execution, it remains unclear if he survived. He does not appear in the Super 17 Saga when other villains escape from Hell, leaving his ultimate fate unknown.
