Summary
Roberto is a farmer and the husband of Jessica, as well as the father of Romeo and the twin brothers Carlo and Pietro. His home village of Sonogno was devastated by a prolonged drought, causing severe crop failures that left Roberto and his family struggling to survive. During this period of hardship, Luini, known as the "God of Death," arrived in the village to recruit boys to sell as chimney sweeps in Milan. Romeo unfortunately caught Luini's attention. Although Luini approached Roberto to purchase his son, Roberto firmly refused. Enraged, Luini discovered that Roberto still possessed one remaining cornfield and set it ablaze. While Roberto and Romeo rushed to the burning field to salvage what they could, Roberto suffered a severe head injury. Unable to afford medical care due to their ruined livelihood, the family was in desperate need of treatment. Consequently, Romeo felt compelled to sell himself to Luini to secure a physician. Luini honored the contract by sending Baregi, a doctor from Locarno, to Sonogno. By the final episode of the anime, Roberto had made a full recovery from his injuries. He had instilled in Romeo the values of bravery, strength, and integrity, leading Romeo to frequently make difficult decisions based on how he believes his father would act.
