Summary
Hailing from Takigakure, the Village Hidden in the Waterfall, Kakuzu is a missing-nin and one of the original members of Akatsuki. At ninety-one years old, his name derives from the shogi term kakugyō, meaning bishop. He serves as the organization’s treasurer, a role he assumes to manage funds collected through bounties and other missions, though it is unclear if this is an official position. Kakuzu is driven by an insatiable greed, viewing money as the only reliable entity in his life. He maintains close ties with bounty collectors and possesses extensive knowledge regarding dangerous targets and their worth. While he employs a personal banker and accountant, and claims loyalty to the Akatsuki leader’s orders over personal profit, his primary motivation remains financial gain. He tolerates his partner Hidan largely because the immortal shinigami’s religious rituals facilitate faster bounty collection. Their partnership is fraught with mutual disdain; Kakuzu finds Hidan’s rituals tedious, while Hidan despises Kakuzu’s mercenary nature. Kakuzu’s history is marked by a tendency to kill anyone who angers him, including previous partners, forcing him to rely on Hidan’s immortality to avoid the burden of constantly finding new teammates.
