Garlic Junior
Summary
Garlic Junior is a demon who serves as the primary antagonist in the Dragon Ball Z movie Dead Zone and later leads a filler arc in the anime. Born from deep resentment after his father was sealed by Kami in the realm of darkness, Garlic Jr. seeks revenge by gathering the Dragon Balls to achieve immortality. He is initially defeated by an enraged Gohan, who banishes him to the Dead Zone, a parallel dimension he can open at will. However, he returns during the interval between the Freeza and Trunks sagas for the Garlic Jr. Saga. In this return, he confronts a united front of Kuririn, Piccolo, and Son Gohan, utilizing the Makyo-sei as his power source and unleashing the Black Water Mist to turn victims into mindless demon slaves under his command. His reign ends when Gohan destroys the Makyo-sei, draining his energy and trapping him back in the Dead Zone. Visually and vocally, Garlic Jr. bears a striking resemblance to the earlier villain Pilaf, with both being cunning, dwarf-like antagonists voiced by Chuck Huber and Shigeru Chiba respectively. Despite these similarities, their roles differ significantly; while Pilaf functions primarily as comic relief, Garlic Jr. is portrayed as a far more serious and sadistic threat, reflecting the darker tone adopted by the Dragon Ball series as it progressed.
