Sesshoumaru is the elder half-brother of Inuyasha, a distinction that defines much of his character as a full-blooded dog-demon who holds a deep contempt for his sibling’s half-demon heritage and his alliances with humans. Recognized as an immensely powerful yokai whose raw strength rivals few, he nonetheless failed to defeat Naraku when given the opportunity in volume twenty-three. While fan communities frequently label him the Lord of the Western Lands, this title never appears in the manga, and author Rumiko Takahashi has clarified that he lacks a permanent residence. Distinct from other demons in the InuYasha world, Sesshoumaru has no desire to collect shards of the Shikon Jewel. His narrative arc begins with a quest for Tessaiga, a legendary sword forged from their father Inu-no-Taisho’s fang, capable of slaying a hundred yokai in a single strike. Because Inu-no-Taisho bequeathed Tessaiga to Inuyasha, Sesshoumaru inherited Tenseiga instead, a blade incapable of harming the living but able to resurrect the dead. This arrangement was intended by their father to teach Sesshoumaru compassion, though he initially viewed the sword as useless. Consequently, he clashed with Inuyasha repeatedly to seize Tessaiga. After Tessaiga was shattered by Goshinki, an incarnation of Naraku, Sesshoumaru had Goshinki’s fangs forged into Tokijin, a malevolent sword that only he possessed the strength to wield. During this period, his demeanor was characterized by ruthlessness and cruelty. Despite his aversion to humans, Sesshoumaru develops a protective interest in Rin, a young girl orphaned when demons destroyed her village. Rin had initially encountered the injured Sesshoumaru in the woods near her home and attempted to aid him, though he refused her assistance. After discovering her nearly consumed by Koga’s wolves, he utilized Tenseiga to restore her life. Rin thereafter attaches herself to him, regarding herself as one of his servants.
