Usui, Horokeu

Summary

Horohoro is an Ainu native of Hokkaidou, a Japanese prefecture, though the English anime adaptation identifies his origin as the Northern Woods. He is driven by the ambition to save the Koro Pokkuru, also known as Minutians in the English version, by planting an expansive field of Butterbur. His guardian spirit is Kororo, who is infatuated with Manta Oyamada. Within the narrative, Horohoro rises to become the third strongest of the Five Elemental Warriors, acquiring the Spirit of Rain. His furyoku rating stands at 120,000, a figure that technically surpasses the 108,000 of Yoh and the 100,001 of Tao Ren, despite their greater narrative prominence. Personality-wise, Horohoro is generally good-natured and cheerful, yet he becomes serious when facing danger. He frequently clashes with his teammate Tao Ren, appearing to have no rapport with him. However, he harbors deep loyalty, telling You Asakura that he would never forgive him if he failed to save Ren as a friend. He is also highly secretive regarding his past, refusing to discuss it even with close companions. Horohoro can be intensely competitive, notably freezing and shattering Ryuu’s arms during the conflict between The Ren and Funbari Onsen. His name, spelled in Katakana to sound like "boroboro" meaning crap, is a source of running gags due to frequent mispronunciations by other characters. It is eventually revealed that his true name is Usui Horokeu.
