Summary
As the mother of the four well-known Sugimoto sisters, Chie is noticeably older than the other parents in the series, having raised three adult daughters and one who is currently in her final year of high school. This maturity lends her a sense of wisdom and equanimity, making her less easily startled by unexpected events. When Yasuko reveals that Fumi is her girlfriend, Chie experiences only a momentary shock, which seems to stem more from the fact that her youngest child is dating than from the gender of the partner, as she accepts the situation without hesitation. Her open-mindedness is further demonstrated during conversations with Shinako, Kazusa, and Kuri about Yasuko and Fumi’s relationship, where she displays full acceptance. She even casually speculates that Yasuko may have already engaged in sexual activity with Fumi, a comment that causes significant embarrassment and exasperation for her elder daughters, highlighting her relaxed attitude toward Yasuko’s lifestyle.
