Summary
Lau begins his story as the branch manager of an English division for a successful Chinese trading firm, where he is an acquaintance of both Ciel and Madam Red. Despite his odd rapport with the young Earl, Lau operates in dubious legal territory, dealing primarily in opium and running a prosperous opium den. When Ciel threatens to shut down his illegal operations, citing his authority over such matters, Lau cheerfully dismisses the threat, noting that he will simply find another profitable avenue. While much of his personal history remains a mystery, Lau is clearly far more capable than he lets on. He demonstrates this by effortlessly incapacitating the guards of a mansion that Ciel and the others are attempting to infiltrate, doing so before anyone else even notices. A cheerful enigma, Lau rarely displays any expression other than a highly amused smile, even during perilous investigations. He seems to enjoy complicating Ciel’s life by appearing at inconvenient hours to drink tea or watch him hunt for murderers, though perhaps not in the way Ciel would prefer. He habitually refers to others by their titles, addressing Ciel as Earl and Sebastian as Butler. Nothing appears to rattle him, and he excels at feigning greater knowledge than he possesses, using this tactic to gain an advantage in various situations.
