Jahana, Mao

Summary

Mao, the daughter of the head of the Jahana Yakuza and a classmate of Kai, is defined by her strong will and stubbornness. Often bossy and keen on maintaining control, a trait likely inherited from her father, she presents a blunt and confrontational exterior that serves as a brave facade whenever she feels threatened or things do not go according to plan. Upon meeting Okamura and discovering that he possesses information regarding Kai’s disappearance, Mao compels him to allow her to join the search. She funds the journey using money stolen from her father, a risky move that implies Okamura would have attempted to kill her for the theft had she not succeeded in recruiting him. Mao remains determined to stay by Kai’s side, resisting his efforts to protect her from the dangers involving him and Saya. As the narrative unfolds and she accepts that Kai does not reciprocate her feelings, her attitude toward Saya shifts. As the sole female presence in a group of men, Mao becomes increasingly protective and concerned for Saya’s well-being, particularly as her friend’s health appears to deteriorate.
