Carlton, Lydia

Carlton, Lydia

Summary

Lydia Carlton is a seventeen-year-old fairy doctor and the daughter of Professor Carlton. Inheriting the rare ability to see fairies from her mother, Lydia displays green eyes, a physical trait common to those with this gift. An independent and compassionate individual, she is deeply devoted to her father and will go to any lengths to support him. Her path crosses with Edgar when she assists him in retrieving the Merrow's Sword, a feat that helps secure his recognition as the Blue Knight Earl by the Queen of England. Consequently, she begins working for Edgar as his consultant on fairy-related issues. Despite her kindness, Lydia harbors a fear of romance due to childhood trauma. She once received a love letter from a boy who was merely dared by his friends to do so, an experience that left her disillusioned with love. To ward off the aggressive advances of Kelpie, she cast a spell to keep him away. Initially, she dismisses Edgar’s romantic declarations as typical playboy behavior, unable to believe his sincerity. Her self-esteem is fragile; she refers to her hair as "rust-colored" and compares herself unfavorably to her late mother, who was renowned for her beauty. Despite others noting that they do not resemble each other, Lydia once confessed to Paul Ferman that she believes she is not cute and feels compelled to help others through hard work to compensate. Lydia’s professional ambition is to become a full-fledged fairy doctor, often willingly placing herself in danger to mediate conflicts between humans and fairies. She is currently regarded as Edgar’s fiancée, a title she vehemently denies despite his courtship and the claims of various fairies. This status arose when she accepted a moonstone ring previously owned by Gwendolen, the countess of a former Blue Knight Earl, which effectively constituted accepting his proposal. The ring possesses protective magic, having saved her soul from being trapped by the fairy world in volume six and later breaking Kelpie’s spell when he attempted to drag her to the fairy realm to protect her from the conflict between Edgar and the Prince.
