Nightroad, Cain

Summary

Cain, the eldest among the Test Tube Babies and often mistaken as Abel’s elder twin, was originally the gentle and beloved leader of the Mars Colonization Project until a fatal accident ended his life. Resurrected by Seth through the injection of Crusnik nanomachines, this intervention preserved his existence but drove him into madness. During the war sparked by the colonialists' return to Earth, Cain aligned himself with the vampire returners alongside Abel. However, when Lilith’s influence caused Abel to doubt their path, Cain murdered her. Enraged, Abel and Seth confronted Cain, ejecting him from their spacecraft into the atmosphere where his body burned to ash. Although Cain managed to regenerate from the ashes, he occasionally struggles to maintain the cohesion of his reconstructed form. Nine centuries later, Cain encountered Isaak Fernand von Kämpfer. Together, they seized control of the Rosenkreuz Orden, a minor Berlin-based group of enemies of the Vatican. Through their combined charisma and power, the organization transformed into the world’s preeminent terrorist group. While Cain’s ultimate motives remain ambiguous, he appears dedicated to the destruction of humanity and the world. His followers address him as "Mein Herr" or "Mein Herr Contra Mundi," though he is most commonly known by the title Contra Mundi. Upon learning that Cain survived, Abel’s primary objective shifted to eliminating his brother permanently. During the Rosenkreuz Orden’s assault on Albion, the brothers clashed for the first time. Cain defeated Abel effortlessly, leveraging his higher Crusnik fusion level and the distraction caused by Esther’s sudden appearance. Believing Abel had sabotaged the rocket’s control panels, Cain intended to merge with Abel’s corpse to extract access codes from his memory. However, Caterina and Tres revived Abel using Lilith’s nanomachines, equalizing their power levels. Their subsequent battle ended in a draw, leading Abel, accompanied by Ion Fortuna, to vow an eternal hunt until Cain is finally destroyed. When activating his Crusnik powers, Cain’s lips and eyes turn red, blue claws extend from his hands, four white wings emerge, and a black lance materializes. In this state, he can generate destructive red energy. Even without this form, he possesses super strength and the ability to launch invisible, destructive force from his hands. Among the four Crusniks, Cain is the only one in the novels to achieve 100% fusion with his nanomachines, although the anime depicts Abel reaching the same level without insanity after being infused with Lilith’s nanomachines.
