Wiseman

Summary

The Death Phantom, who adopts the alias Wiseman, is an immortal embodiment of Chaos originating from the future. In the English anime adaptation, he is referred to as Doom Phantom. In the manga continuity, the Death Phantom was originally a human resident of the future kingdom of Crystal Tokyo who possessed dangerous dark powers. He used these abilities to terrorize the citizens of Crystal Tokyo. His specific powers included death hands, which allowed him to attack targets from insurmountable distances, and evil vision, which enabled him to control the minds of others through eye contact. Neo-Queen Serenity banished him to the barren tenth planet, Nemesis. Over an unspecified duration, the Death Phantom merged his spirit with the planet, becoming one with Nemesis. He concealed his decaying human form and extended his psychic reach to Earth to seek out discontent. He persuaded certain individuals that the 30th-century utopia of Crystal Tokyo was unnatural, arguing that the citizens' immortality via the Silver Crystal was an abomination against nature. This manipulation led to the creation of the Black Moon Clan. As Wiseman, the Death Phantom led his followers in a near-fatal assault on Crystal Tokyo before traveling back to the time of Sailor Moon to seize the Silver Crystal and exact his revenge. He shows little regard for his subordinates, manipulating them and sending young traitors to their deaths, including killing Rubeus himself. Upon encountering Chibiusa as a new conduit for power, he fills her with dark energy, transforming her into Black Lady. When Demand finally regains his senses and blasts the Wiseman with all his strength, the Wiseman's decayed body shatters. However, Black Lady laughs and reveals that Wiseman is actually Nemesis. After his followers are eliminated and Black Lady reverts to Sailor Chibi Moon, he generates a dark energy swirl to kill the Sailor Senshi. Sailor Moon and Chibi Moon counter this with a Double Moon Princess Halation, resulting in his destruction. In the anime, the Death Phantom first approached Prince Demand when he was much younger. The Black Moon Clan consisted of descendants of traitors exiled to Nemesis centuries earlier by Neo-Queen Serenity and King Endymion of Crystal Tokyo. Posing as Wiseman, the Death Phantom manipulated them into gathering power for himself. He promised them the ability to travel to Earth and appeal directly to Neo-Queen Serenity for amnesty for the citizens of Nemesis, who had committed no crimes. However, his influence gradually warped his pawns' minds, causing them to execute his plan for revenge and the ultimate destruction of Earth. The Wiseman personally counseled Rubeus during his mission but remained indifferent to his death. He condescendingly humiliated Esmeraude when she requested to become the queen of Nemesis, triggering her transformation into a hideous dragon and leading to her death. He manipulated Chibiusa's childhood memories to create Black Lady. Finally, he kills Saphir when the latter realizes he and his brother have been deceived. In the end, the Death Phantom is destroyed, but Nemesis and its inhabitants survive.
