Summary
Featured in the "Kiyohime Legend," Kiyohime fell instantly in love with the handsome monk Anchin when he asked for shelter for the night while traveling to a temple in Kumano. After she visited him late at night, she was bluntly rejected, though Anchin promised to meet her upon his return from Kumano. Fearful of Kiyohime, he broke his promise and fled without seeing her. Overcome by despair, grief, and resentment at the betrayal, Kiyohime transformed into a dragon and gave chase. She finally caught up to him at a temple and burned Anchin to death while he hid inside a bell.
