Summary
Rei is a charismatic second-year student at Seiran who makes her debut when Nanako encounters her on the bus transporting new students, including Tomoko, to their first day of high school. Nanako is instantly captivated by Rei’s striking beauty, self-assured demeanor, and particularly her voice, which she describes as possessing a profound warmth. Sharing aesthetic similarities with Kaoru, Rei presents an androgynous elegance, typically dressed in dark, masculine attire. She embodies a rebellious spirit, openly smoking despite school regulations and displaying a penchant for throwing knives at the old clock tower. Beneath this tough exterior lies a sensitive and tormented soul who finds solace in reading and reciting the poetry of Verlaine. She is revered by younger students for her diverse talents, excelling in basketball, school theater, and playing the piano, flute, violin, and guitar. However, her presence is always accompanied by a collection of pills that she uses to numb the pain stemming from her complex and mysterious relationship with Lady Miya. Her name is derived from Louis-Antoine de Saint-Just, the French Revolutionary figure known as "The Angel of Death" for his cold beauty and role in sending opponents to the guillotine. Much like her namesake, Rei’s gaze is described by Nanako as holding a non-human superiority, attentively observing a distant, undefined point that may even be death itself.
