Summary
Mamimi Samejima is a seventeen-year-old truant high school student who smokes frequently and spends much of her time lurking under a bridge, often carrying a camera. Formerly the girlfriend of Tasuku, she begins pursuing Naota after his brother departs Japan. She exhibits pyromaniacal tendencies, frequently seen smoking cigarettes labeled "Never Knows Best." Mamimi habitually refers to people and objects as Ta-kun, a nickname derived from her intimate address for Tasuku, though she also uses the term for Naota, whom she sees as a replacement. She addresses Tasuku as Tasuku-sempai, acknowledging him as an older classmate. Her obsession with fire is linked to an incident where Tasuku rescued her from an elementary school blaze, although it is later suggested she may have started it herself. Mamimi struggles to distinguish between fantasy and reality, believing that Canti is the manifestation of Cantido, a video game deity to whom she offers burned items as sacrifices. She projects an aura of benign emptiness that leads many, particularly Naota’s classmates, to disdain her, while her peers bully her. Despite this, she can be highly destructive when unobserved, spending much of FLCLimax attempting revenge on those who wronged her, only to have her schemes backfire. Mamimi displays a lack of control and willpower, relying heavily on others like Naota or Tasuku. She prefers caring for weak-willed entities, abandoning them or allowing them to escape once they gain independence, a trait that explains her shifting interest in Naota. This dynamic culminates in disaster when her final project, a terminal core from a robot, goes haywire and overwhelms both her and the military. Sexually frustrated, she pursues uncomfortable levels of intimacy with Naota, likely viewing him as a substitute for Tasuku. When questioned about her clinginess, she replies, "If I don't, I'll overflow." While most call her Mamimi, Naota’s friends label her "Naota's Wife," Haruko calls her Sameji, and Amarao refers to her simply as that high school girl.
