Summary
Raised at Watari’s Wammy’s House in Winchester, England, Mello is the elder of L’s two successors. Born on December 13, 1989, with blood type A, he was aged between 13 and 15 before the timeskip, and 19 to 20 afterward. He has a fondness for chocolate and dislikes those superior to him. When assigned to collaborate with the other successor, Near, Mello refused, citing an inability to work with Near, whom he considers second to himself. Like L, he is often seen consuming chocolate bars. The book How to Read 13 describes him as having an excellent mind that sometimes allows emotions to interfere, noting his hatred of Near created a flaw in his personality. However, he is not purely evil, evidenced by his apology and genuine care for Matt’s well-being. Creator Tsugumi Ohba stated that Mello works hard for everything and that his name does not stand for anything, unlike Near’s. He is voiced by Nozomu Sasaki in Japanese, David Hurtwitz in English, and Javier Olguín in Latin Spanish.
