Summary

Jaken is a youkai who serves as the attendant to Sesshoumaru. Although he lacks significant power, his devotion to his master is absolute, often making him a source of comic relief. Sesshoumaru typically responds to Jaken’s failures or irritating behavior with physical beatings, yet Jaken accepts this treatment as his master’s prerogative and remains unwavering in his loyalty. His allegiance began after witnessing Sesshoumaru’s immense power and majesty while the latter slayed a demon that threatened Jaken’s life, an act that ultimately saved him. However, this event was merely incidental, as Sesshoumaru had killed the demon simply because it was obstructing his path. This backstory was revealed exclusively in the anime adaptation. The name "Jaken" translates to "meanness" or "unkindness."
