Summary
Carlo, also known as Diego, is a mid-30s member of Yami who specializes in Lucha Libre and represents the organization with the symbol of Steel. As one of the Nine Fists, he holds the title of Smiling Steel Fist, distinguished by his flamboyant demeanor and the Sei, or Smiling Mask, he wears. His Yomi disciple is Rachel Stanley, whose combat philosophy mirrors his own belief that fights are performances for an audience's enjoyment. During the D of D tournament arc, Diego serves as the sole representative of the Nine Fists on the island and acts as the tournament referee. He permits the Shinpaku Alliance to enter the competition, driven by his belief in the romance of trespassing. He maintains that a loser must accept the winner’s decision regarding their life, and he is famously seen smiling or laughing even when enraged. Secretly, Diego and Rachel plotted for Rachel to fight Kenichi, inviting him and a chosen master to a tag team match under threat of a bomb explosion if they refused or brought extra help. Although he was surprised by Renka’s arrival with Ma Kensei, he proceeded with the battle, which he dubbed his "Murder Show" alongside the impending ship explosion. When Kensei’s fiery rage caused Diego to lose his composure, he removed his Smiling Mask to reveal a second mask underneath, transforming into the Dou, or Angry Mask. In this state, known as the Angry Steel Fist, he fought with ferocious power, disregarding the safety of the audience who were now considered targets for elimination by Yami. He attempted to keep Kensei airborne, believing Lucha Libre could defeat any technique in the air, but was ultimately defeated when Kensei grounded him, asserting that the earth belongs to Chinese Kenpo. After his plans were thwarted by the intervention of Miu, Kenichi, and Furinji Hayato, Diego ensured the cameras focused on him until the end, declaring that even his defeat would be of "Diego Quality." He offered his mask to Kensei, requesting execution, but was denied. Kushinada subsequently arrived and threw him overboard, after which he was rescued by an elder and transported to Big Lock. In combat, Diego possesses a body described as steel-hard, rendering most attacks ineffective, and demonstrates exceptional speed, capable of quickly maneuvering around opponents to trap them in headlocks.
