Gaimon’s body was imprisoned inside an empty treasure chest after he lost his grip while scaling a small cliff on the mysterious Island of Rare Animals, known as Gold Island in the 4Kids dub, while attempting to find treasure with his pirate crew. His crew left him stranded on the island, and the chest became his permanent body, though he could still use his hands, head, and feet. It took twenty years for another person to find him. After shrinking due to being stuck in the chest, Gaimon could no longer scale the cliff. He protected his treasures using a gun and a spooky voice to drive away intruders. Monkey D. Luffy and his crew passed the trial and became friends. However, when Luffy reached the top of the cliff, Gaimon realized the chests were empty and he had protected a nonexistent treasure for twenty years. He declined an offer to join the Straw Hats. He then considered the animals as his treasures and vowed to protect them. Chibi Buggy eventually met and befriended Gaimon in the Special Cover Miniseries.
