Nene Hawk, Gaty
Summary
Gaty, also known as Gato, is a character in Saiyuki Reload who debuted in the "Even a Worm Arc." His full name, Gaty Nene Hawk, is revealed in volume 9, chapter 43. Serving as Hazel’s large bodyguard and traveling companion, he wields two pistols and fights recklessly, relying on his ability to be instantly resurrected by Hazel. This power functions as long as Hazel keeps a soul in his pendant or if there is a corpse nearby to harvest. His past is mostly obscure, though it is known that he met Hazel years prior, was injured by him, and was spared. He views protecting Hazel as his destiny. Described by Ukoku Sanzo as a young man from a tribe that worships nature, he appears to be of Native American descent and has no need for sleep. He originally opposed Hazel when the latter attempted to help the tribe during an attack by demons they had made peace with, becoming the first human Hazel mistakenly killed. After being immediately revived, he was shunned by his tribe as an abomination against nature. Hailing from the Eastern continent, Gaty visited Shangri-la with Hazel. He is a dead man brought back to life through Hazel’s reanimation technique, considering the perfectionist Hazel to be his entire world. Although he was once human, he cannot elaborate on that experience. He travels with Hazel as his bodyguard, obeying his commands absolutely. Towering over two meters tall with strong arms and quick movements, he defeats youkai with his highly accurate handguns and will sacrifice his body to protect Hazel. When he dies in battle, Hazel revives him using the reanimation technique. His eyes are yellow, a trait specific to the reanimated, and a scar on his forehead remains from the injury Hazel inflicted while he was alive. He requires no food, sleep, or any other sustenance associated with living. Despite being extremely silent and expressionless, Gaty is a pacifist with a good-natured heart. He considers Goku a friend, apparently due to Goku’s nonchalant approach to their connection.
