McDonell, Chocolove

Summary

Chocolove A. McDonell, often referred to as Joco, is a complex figure whose origin story varies significantly between the anime and the manga. In the anime, his journey begins on a snowy night when he was young, observing his future mentor, Orona. While a crowd circled a robbery victim and police held the robber at bay, the criminal threatened to kill his hostage. Orona stepped forward to intervene, successfully disarming the situation with humor, leaving the robber laughing uncontrollably as he was arrested. The manga presents a darker, more detailed backstory. On Christmas, McDonell and his gang, Shaft, murdered a man. This act was driven by McDonell’s deep-seated resentment toward the day, which also marked the tragic death of his parents years prior. Haunted by this memory, he wandered the streets alone until he encountered Orona. When McDonell fired his gun in anger, Orona dodged every shot effortlessly. After McDonell mocked Orona’s attempt to use laughter for redemption, Orona utilized his oversoul, Mic, to strike him down. This encounter, combined with McDonell’s eventual laughter at Orona’s philosophy, forged their bond. McDonell eventually confessed to killing Redseb and Seyram’s father, the same man he had murdered on Christmas. To atone for his sins, he blinded himself and became the strongest of the Five Elemental Warriors, inheriting the Spirit of Wind. McDonell’s spiritual arsenal includes Mic Jaguar, a power spirit named after Mick Jagger, which was passed down to him by his deceased master. In the manga continuity, he also acquires a second guardian spirit, Pascal Avaf. By harnessing the power of Pascal Avaf, McDonell creates his armored oversoul form, Jaguarman.
