Karl van Bate is a teacher and master builder originally from King's City, where he formerly led the Mason Guild. He abandoned the capital and sought refuge in Border Town after a theater collapsed due to officials substituting the original stone with inferior, cheaper materials. Known for his calm, sensible, and conscientious nature, he approaches his work with seriousness and without unnecessary fanfare. Although he initially accepted the Church's teachings regarding witches as absolute truth, much like many others, his later experiences gradually led him to question these beliefs. Upon settling in Border Town, Karl established a school dedicated to educating ordinary children rather than limiting his instruction to the offspring of nobles. His students include Anna and Nana Pine, and his close bond with them significantly alters his perspective on witches. Following Nana's awakening, he vows to protect her and attempts to persuade the local lord of the witches' innocence. Practical-minded and open to new ideas, he is willing to undertake any useful task, proving his worth both in the classroom and on the construction site. Serving under Roland, Karl emerges as a pivotal figure in the town's development. He eagerly accepts new projects, leveraging his extensive experience to execute plans related to the expansion and reconstruction of Border Town. Over time, he is entrusted with overseeing all construction efforts and ultimately rises to the position of Minister of Construction.
