Summary
Satsuki Kusakabe is a ten-year-old girl and the older sister of Mei. Her name, Satsuki, refers to the fifth month of the traditional Japanese calendar, corresponding to May. While waiting, Mei eventually drifts off to sleep on Satsuki’s back, at which point Totoro appears beside them, allowing Satsuki to see him for the first time. Since he only has a leaf on his head to shield himself from the rain, Satsuki offers him the umbrella she had brought for their father. In exchange for her kindness, he gives her a bundle of nuts and seeds.
