Summary
Rem is the Shinigami who originally provides Misa with a Death Note and the Shinigami eyes. Much like Ryuk, Rem holds possession of two Death Notes. She deliberately gifted one to Misa, having inherited her second notebook from Jealous, a fellow Shinigami who perished while saving Misa’s life. Rem felt it was proper to pass the item to Misa and also adopted Jealous’s devotion to her. This loyalty drives Rem to protect Misa at any cost, including her own life. She demonstrates her distrust of Light by openly threatening to kill him if Misa dies before her natural time. While the manga and anime confirm Rem is female, the second live-action film omits this detail, leaving her gender ambiguous.
