Summary
Gyula served as the true ruler of Istavan, operating as a dictator from behind the scenes despite the city’s appearance of neutrality. He maintained control through his military police force and harbored a deep desire for revenge against the Vatican for the death of his wife. In pursuit of this vengeance, his forces burned down the Saint Matthias Church, the place where Esther had been raised. Although he was manipulated by Dietrich in a manner similar to Esther, Gyula ultimately came to regret his actions and saved Esther’s life.
