Summary

Zazie, identified as Student Number 31 with a birthdate of March 17, 1989, is the silent acrobat and one of the most enigmatic figures in the class. She maintains a solitary lifestyle, rarely associating with others or speaking; she has uttered only eight lines in the serialized manga. She is a member of the Nightmare Circus, the school’s Acrobatic Club, and was observed directing groups of "monsters" or "spirits"—entities resembling No-Face from Spirited Away, the Angels from Neon Genesis Evangelion, or possibly Hollows from Bleach—when she volunteered to cover for classmates during the school festival. She also presented Chao with a tiny living dragon as a farewell gift. Unlike Kazumi, who has a close bond with her, Zazie can see Sayo without assistance from Negi. According to Negi’s Class Register, she is also part of the Magic Club, though it remains unclear if this involves real magic or stage conjuring. In the anime, she demonstrates proficiency in various circus skills, including juggling, sleight of hand, and costume changing. Zazie has dark skin and distinctive facial markings: a large teardrop under her left eye, reminiscent of the carnival character pierro, and a vertical line resembling a scar across the right side of her face. A splash illustration of the cast depicts claws growing from her fingers. While she is sometimes seen with a pet bird, she is more recently accompanied by her "friends," the black spirit-monsters. She remains the least understood student in Negi’s class. As one of the few Class 3-A students who did not join Negi’s journey to Wales and the Magical World, her origins are hinted at by her name being written in the Latin alphabet, similar to Evangeline, suggesting she is from a country using the Roman script. This theory is supported by Chisame referring to her as a transfer student in volume 2.
