Chiyo

Summary

Chiyo is the grandmother of Sasori and the sister of Ebizo. A former powerful shinobi of the Hidden Village of Sand, she retired after serving as a founder of the village’s puppet division, where she trained numerous disciples and developed innovative puppets. She was also instrumental in sealing the One-Tailed Shukaku inside Gaara at the behest of the Fourth Kazekage. Beyond her puppet mastery, Chiyo was an expert poison maker, though she harbors a lasting grudge against Tsunade of Konoha. During the last Great Ninja War, Tsunade managed to create antidotes for all of Chiyo’s poisons, leading Chiyo to refer to her dismissively as “that slug woman” due to her ability to summon giant slugs. The death of Chiyo’s son and his wife at the hands of Kakashi Hatake’s father, known as the “White Fang of Konoha,” during the Great Ninja War left their son, Sasori, an orphan. Taking him in, Chiyo taught him puppet jutsu to help him cope with his grief. Sasori proved to be a genius, even creating puppets from human bodies, with his first creations being replicas of his deceased parents. However, a dark hatred grew within him, and twenty years before the events of Naruto part II, he fled the Sand Village to join Akatsuki. Chiyo later confronted her grandson during the “Rescue of Gaara” arc and, with help from Sakura, defeated him. Chiyo ultimately sacrificed her life to revive Gaara using the Reincarnation jutsu, a technique originally designed to give life to puppets. As the only shinobi capable of performing this forbidden art, she paid the ultimate price. She also wielded the Ten Puppets of Monzaemon Chikamatsu, a legacy of the inventor of shinobi puppet jutsus. These ten puppets are superior to standard models and are designed to work in unison, unleashing powerful combined jutsus.
