Summary
Dark Bakura is a malevolent spirit sealed within the Millennium Ring, serving as the primary antagonist to Yami Yugi. Bound by a three-thousand-year-old grudge, this dark entity seeks to gather all the Millennium Items to unlock the Door of Darkness, a gateway that bestows immense evil power upon its opener. Lacking a physical form, Dark Bakura forcibly takes control of the host Bakura’s body against his will. Early in the narrative, he torments Bakura by hijacking his body during games with friends, trapping their souls into TRPG miniatures via Penalty Games within the Monster World. This brutal behavior forced Bakura to constantly transfer schools until Yugi, Yami Yugi, and their friends—Jonouchi, Anzu, Honda, and Miho in the 1998 anime—defeated the final boss, Dark Master Zorc, to temporarily purge the spirit’s influence. Later, during the Duelist Kingdom arc, the spirit tricks Bakura into reattaching the Millennium Ring under the guise of reform, claiming he has changed his heart. Unaware of the deception, Bakura’s friends watch as Dark Bakura aids Yami Yugi in outsmarting the Meikyuu Brothers and escaping the labyrinth beneath the arena. The manga leaves his true nature ambiguous for a time; while he occasionally assists Yugi and allows Bakura more bodily autonomy, he is secretly responsible for killing Pegasus, tearing the Millennium Eye from his socket and licking the blood. His malevolence is confirmed during the Dungeon Dice Monsters arc, where he manipulates events to plant a fragment of his soul into a piece of the shattered Millennium Puzzle. His ultimate goal is to orchestrate the gathering of all Millennium Items to initiate the Shadow Role-Playing Game and unleash the darkness sealed within the Puzzle. Throughout the story’s latter half, Dark Bakura continues to seize control of Bakura’s body whenever it serves his selfish ambitions.
