Summary
Johnny Joestar, frequently referred to as "Joe Kid" or "JoJo," was once a celebrated racing prodigy. His trajectory changed drastically when he allowed the girl accompanying him to cut ahead in line at an amusement park, leading to a confrontation where a youth he had insulted shot him. This incident left him paralyzed from the waist down. During his hospitalization, Johnny suffered physical abuse and lost the respect of his former friends, leaving him with no visitors. At the start of the series Steel Ball Run, Johnny met Gyro Zeppeli and was able to stand after touching Gyro's steel ball. Believing Gyro could teach him to walk again, Johnny entered the Steel Ball Race to receive his training. He rides a horse named Slow Dancer, an aging American Appaloosa named after the Boz Scaggs song. Although the horse was initially difficult to tame, it eventually became Johnny's primary means of movement.
