Inugami, Kotarou
Seiyuu / Dub
Summary
Kotaro Inugami first appears as one of three mercenary children assisting Chigusa in Kyoto. As a dog hanyō, he possesses distinct canine ears and a tail. Though he has a hot-headed nature, Kotaro is chivalrous and refuses to strike women unless they are formidable opponents. He trained in the Garyū Inugami-ryū, a self-taught martial arts school, and harbors a strong aversion to Western-style magic, with Negi being a notable exception. An expert in ninjutsu and charms, he can summon inugami, or dog spirits, though he prefers hand-to-hand combat over ranged magic. He also utilizes his inugami abilities for self-propelled flight and can transform into a small black-and-white dog or a more powerful beast form using paper charms. Kotaro claims that most of his techniques, including his ki usage, are self-invented, a theory supported by his ability to accurately analyze Negi’s methods. Following the Kyoto Arc, the Kansai Magic Association sealed his transformation and summoning powers. He later escaped to challenge Negi, whom he views as a rival since Negi is the only peer capable of fighting him on equal terms. Upon arriving at Mahora, he encountered Graf Hermann and The Slime Sisters, discovered their plot against Negi, and fought them. He retrieved the bottle from which Graf Hermann was released before fleeing. While attempting to warn Negi, he was injured and hit with a confusion spell that caused temporary amnesia. Chizuru and Natsumi, mistaking him for a stray dog, nursed him back to health. Kotaro’s background is marked by loneliness, as being a hanyō made him an outcast among both human and dog-yōkai tribes. This isolation drives him to deeply value his friendships with Negi, Chizuru, and Natsumi, who serve as his only true family. Chizuru’s maternal behavior, such as public hugs, often embarrasses him. He frequently scolds Negi for his romantic entanglements, only to have his own relationship with Chizuru used as a counterpoint, though it remains ambiguous whether this stems from a crush or mere embarrassment. Although Kotaro sees himself as a lone wolf, Negi teases him by calling him a dog. His views often lead to losing arguments with Yue, and he holds Kaede in high regard due to her strength. Like Negi, Kotaro has a limited worldview and is largely ignorant of female emotions. His singular focus on becoming the strongest in combat leaves him ill-prepared for non-combat situations.
