Summary
Kunio Murai serves as the class jock bully, characterized by his lack of intelligence and a short temper. Upon Eikichi Onizuka’s arrival at Holy Forest Academy, Kunio and his gang members Kouji Fujiyoshi and Tadaaki Kusano repeatedly attempt to assassinate him through seemingly harmless pranks, such as placing a cockroach in Onizuka’s school lunch. These schemes invariably backfire, resulting in Kunio accidentally consuming the insect and suffering a near-fatal injury from razor-sharp scissors. In retaliation, Onizuka exploits Kunio’s vulnerability by seducing his 27-year-old mother, Julia Murai, after defeating Kunio in various arcade games. It is later disclosed that Julia gave birth to Kunio when she was only 13, having been abandoned by her parents and boyfriend, which explains Kunio’s intense protectiveness toward her. Although the trio eventually befriends Onizuka after he rescues them from ruffians, the relationship is fraught with tension. Onizuka previously forced Kunio to bungee jump from the Tokyo Bay Bridge after temporarily joining the ruffians. Kunio becomes enraged whenever Onizuka makes advances toward his mother, fearing that Onizuka might become his new stepfather. This anxiety is further highlighted when he suspects Julia is dating a man who resembles Dr. Elefun from Astro Boy.
