Summary
Jabbathe initially appeared attempting to seize a fortress but was losing the battle. Askeladd dispatched Thorfinn to negotiate, offering Jabbathe and his one hundred men a place in their ranks for half the spoils, or the option to ally with the opposing side if they refused. Although Jabbathe accepted the deal, he had no intention of actually dividing the loot. With Askeladd’s assistance, the fortress was captured, but in a twist that surprised Jabbathe, Askeladd had already claimed all the material gains, leaving Jabbathe with nothing but the empty honor of victory.
