Summary
Calaveras, known as Avery in English adaptations, is the second-oldest of the Dark Sisters and shares Tuxedo Mask’s ability to communicate with the deceased. Named after the mineral calaverite, she serves as a counterpart to Minako Aino. In the manga, she is the final sister to appear, tasked with "Code:004, Operation Re-birth." Her primary goal is to channel the spirit of Rubeus into Tokyo to brainwash humanity, shifting their loyalty from the White Moon to the Black Moon and compelling them to destroy the Silver Crystal. During this ritual, she captures Sailor Venus by channeling her three captive sisters through Kotono, Asanuma, and Naru, alongside the spirits of her own deceased siblings, to launch a Spirit Attack. Although she holds Venus captive, Rubeus is unable to retrieve her due to injuries sustained from Tuxedo Mask. Consequently, Calaveras is killed by Sailor Moon during the rescue attempt. In the anime, Calaveras is portrayed as a petty individual who enjoys teasing her siblings, particularly Petz, and refuses to undertake missions independently. She frequently tags along on Petz’s operations, once following her to steal credit for Berthier’s final assignment. Her own ultimate mission involves assisting Petz, who uses a powerful stick to kill the Sailor Senshi and their purified sisters, Cooan and Berthier. Calaveras urges Petz to eliminate the other two girls, but Petz, corrupted by the artifact, attempts to kill all three. After Petz’s betrayal, Sailor Moon shows Calaveras pity, helping her understand human love. She reveals the stick’s power to the other Senshi. When Rubeus uses the stick to create a time-vacuum on a bridge, Calaveras saves Petz from falling into the vortex using her whip. After the Senshi destroy the stick, Calaveras accepts purification and transforms into a normal human woman. Her combat style involves a whip called the "Dark Love Whip," which mirrors Venus’s Love Me Chain. She utilizes the energy of her dead sisters to attack Venus, whom she fails to kidnap in the manga. Notably, she is the only sister Rubeus appears to flirt with.
