Summary
Snufkin, also known as Snusmumriken in Swedish and Nuuskamuikkunen in Finnish, appears in Tove Jansson’s Moomin book series. He is Moomintroll’s best friend, traveling south during the winter and returning in the spring. Born to the Mymble and the Joxter, he is the half-brother to the Mymble’s daughter and Little My. An adventurer and vagabond, he is admired by the small and shy. Clad in old green clothes and a wide-brimmed hat he has worn since birth, he lives in a tent, smokes a pipe, and plays the harmonica. Snufkin strongly dislikes authority figures like the Park Keeper, as well as the regulation signs and fences they erect, often leading to him being viewed as an anarchist. He once sabotaged the Park Keeper by planting Hattifatteners in his garden, causing them to grow and force him out. Preferring wild foliage to manicured lawns, Snufkin minimizes his worldly possessions, viewing them as burdens and valuing memories over physical objects. This trait contrasts sharply with the character of Sniff.
