Summary
Yuyuko serves as the ghostly princess of Hakugyokurou, the netherworld designated for the formerly-living, despite having once been a mortal human. Her history is marked by tragedy; after taking her own life, her corpse was repurposed to seal the Saigyou Ayakashi, a perilous youkai cherry tree, to prevent it from slaughtering innocent people. In the events of Perfect Cherry Blossom, she directed Youmu to locate a method to make the tree bloom, intending to resurrect the body buried beneath its roots. She was seemingly unaware that the remains were her own. When she realized that fulfilling this wish would lead to her complete destruction and the release of the Saigyou Ayakashi’s terror once more, she abandoned the plan and accepted her destined existence. Yuyuko possesses the ability to invite mortal souls to death, directing those who perish in this manner to Hakugyokurou instead of heaven or hell. While her whimsical and flaky demeanor might suggest danger for someone wielding such a potent ability, she demonstrates immense responsibility. She never employs her power recklessly, out of spite, or as a weapon. Ironically, this very power is what drove her to commit suicide originally. Despite the awe and fear humans feel toward her supernatural abilities, Yuyuko remains cheerful and friendly. Unlike many spirits, she retains the appearance of a living human, and her playful, good-natured personality has a disarming effect. She frequently makes bizarre, nonsensical remarks and appears to overlook obvious details, leading to her characterization as an airhead or ditz. Conversely, she can display extreme cunning and perceptiveness, backed by vast knowledge, leaving it unclear whether her ditzy or intelligent side represents her true personality. She rarely takes matters seriously and enjoys teasing her straight-laced assistant, Youmu, who contrasts with her in nearly every way. Additionally, she is famous for her enormous appetite and her tendency to use food-related metaphors in every situation, proving that she is truly dead and loving it.
