Kurushima, Miwa

Summary

Miwa Kurushima serves as a recurring figure in the series, functioning alternately as a patron of Eden Hall and a narrative voice. Her initial appearance involves seeking answers from Ryū regarding the spirit contained in a bottle she shattered during her childhood. As a child, Miwa was the sole offspring of her family. Her father once proposed converting the inn run by Miwa’s grandfather into a modern, hotel-style bar to adapt to shifting eras and customer demands, but her grandfather refused. This disagreement drove a wedge between father and son, creating distance that lasted until the father invited his own father to taste a special new creation. During this visit, a young Miwa tripped while rushing to her grandfather, causing the bagged bottle to break and its contents to spill. Consumed by guilt, she believed that sharing the drink might have reconciled her father and grandfather. Tragedy struck when her parents died in a car accident, preventing her from ever learning the name of that specific beverage. After Ryū unraveled the mystery, Miwa finally had the opportunity to let her grandfather sample the drink, which was revealed to be Suntory’s Kakubin, known in the show as "Kaku." Following this resolution, Miwa becomes a frequent side character and narrator in subsequent episodes. She is a regular at Eden Hall, having even brought a friend to the bar. In episode 7, she tends to a sick Ryū, though she cannot secure a doctor. In the manga adaptation of Bartender, Miwa is depicted as working for Kamishima, the series' first customer.
