Summary
Makoto Ariga, often called Mako-chan primarily by Shuuichi, first appears in the sixth grade despite attending a different class than him. She is a trans girl who desires acceptance as a female and bonds with Shuuichi over their shared interest in cute outfits. However, she recognizes that her facial freckles and round glasses prevent her from achieving the same level of cuteness as Shuuichi when presenting as her gender. Makoto occasionally questions whether her desire to be accepted as a girl stems from an attraction to men, a perspective Shuuichi cannot relate to. Maturity beyond her years, Makoto thinks calmly and offers objective advice to her friends. Her strong listening skills allow her to get along well with both boys and girls, often positioning her as an observer of the events unfolding around her. She is an only child whose parents operate a bakery.
