Yajirobe

Summary

Yajirobe is a samurai who once lived in isolation within the wilderness. He initially encounters Son Goku after the latter consumes the fish Yajirobe was cooking, sparking a conflict between the two. Their rivalry quickly turns to friendship when Cymbal, the third offspring of Piccolo Daimao, appears seeking the One-Star Dragon Ball in Yajirobe’s possession. Yajirobe manages to defeat and consume Cymbal, yet when the Piccolo Daimao threat looms, he chooses to cower rather than join Goku in battle. Consequently, he supports the Z Fighters from the sidelines by living with Karin, where he cultivates and delivers Senzu Beans to the group. Following this period, his role as a combatant diminishes, and he primarily serves as a provider of Senzu Beans for the heroes. He briefly takes center stage during comic-relief filler segments in the Artificial Human and Cell Sagas. By the Majin Buu Saga, Yajirobe has become a minor character who still makes occasional appearances. He makes only a short appearance in Dragon Ball GT, episode 40, where he is depicted with a mustache. In the alternate Future Trunks timeline, Yajirobe diverges from the path taken by Master Roshi and others; instead of hiding, he engages in combat against the Artificial Humans. Although this is not depicted in the Trunks TV Special, his death is briefly shown during the Cell Saga in the anime. In the original Japanese version, he is voiced by Mayumi Tanaka, who also voices Kuririn. This casting choice likely stems from the original manga, where Goku notes that Yajirobe’s voice resembles Kuririn’s.
