Tsukushi

Summary

Tsukushi, known as Bugsy in English adaptations, serves as the Azalea Town Gym Leader and is renowned for his expertise with Bug-type Pokémon. He is the custodian of the Hive Badge, and his name is derived from the word bug. In the anime, Tsukushi presents as an unremarkable Gym Leader who operates out of a massive greenhouse dome featuring a forest-like interior. His guiding principle is that understanding the rules of Bug Pokémon allows one to rule them. He employs a Scyther that he has specifically trained to counter Fire-type attacks. His other team members include a Spinarak skilled in String Shot and a particularly tough Metapod. When Ash challenges the Gym, his inexperienced Cyndaquil loses to Spinarak, and while Chikorita manages to defeat Spinarak, it is subsequently beaten by the hard-hitting Metapod. Pikachu defeats the Metapod, but ultimately it is Cyndaquil that triumphs over Scyther, securing the Hive Badge for Ash. In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Tsukushi appears as an androgynous archaeologist exploring the Ruins of Alph and studying Symbol Pokémon. His signature partner is a Heracross, supported by a Metapod, and he later adds a Kakuna and Scyther to his roster. He utilizes a unique capture method he invented alongside Kurt, the Poké Ball master. This technique involves a capture net attached to his Poké Ball; when a Pokémon is trapped in the net, it is automatically sucked into the Ball. Even if a Pokémon escapes the Ball, it remains trapped in the net, preventing a complete breakout. However, when facing Suicune, Tsukushi’s direct attacks fail because his Heracross is no match for the legendary Pokémon’s superior strength. He attempts to use his net method to capture Suicune, but for the first time, Suicune breaks the net and escapes. Tsukushi is later defeated by Sabrina during the Gym Leaders' Challenge.
